Ice Cleats with 10 Steel Spikes – Snow Grips for Walking Boots and Shoes, Sizes S M L, for Ice and Packed Snow

  • Grip under the whole sole – 10 steel spikes, 6 under the ball of the foot and 4 under the heel: your foot grips ice and packed snow at every stage of the step.
  • They hold on descents too – the spikes under the heel work exactly when you put your foot down going downhill, where slipping is most likely.
  • For mountain roads and trails – the icy road to the chalet or mountain hut, winter trails, walks on packed snow and icy yards.
  • They slip over your boots – elastic rubber (TPE) with a toe cap and a heel loop: it wraps around the shoe and stays in place.
  • Three sizes, also for children – S for EU shoe sizes 25 to 34, M from 35 to 39, L from 40 to 45. With chunky boots or if you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
  • Light, they fit in your rucksack – they fold up and fit in a rucksack pocket: put them on when the ground turns icy.
  • There is also a city model – for icy pavements and courtyards: 5 studs under the middle of the shoe, one size, on in a moment.

Mountain ice cleats with 10 steel spikes

The icy mountain road

In the mountains ice comes early and leaves late: the road to the chalet or mountain hut, the trail you walk without thinking in summer, the shady stretch where packed snow has turned into a sheet of ice. With just the soles of your boots every descent becomes a risk. Mountain ice cleats slip over your shoes or boots and put 10 steel spikes under the whole sole that bite into ice and hard snow.

How they are made

Each cleat is an overshoe in elastic rubber (TPE) shaped like the sole. Underneath there are 10 steel spikes: 6 under the ball of the foot and 4 under the heel. At the front a cap wraps the toe of the shoe, at the back a loop goes over the heel: the rubber pulls and keeps the cleat tight against the sole even on long walks. The pack contains one pair, that is two cleats in the chosen size.

How to choose the size

There are three sizes: S for EU shoe sizes 25 to 34, M from 35 to 39, L from 40 to 45. The rubber stretches, so there is some margin. If you wear chunky mountain boots or are between two sizes, choose the larger one: a cleat that is stretched too tight is hard to put on and wears out sooner. From size 46 up this model does not fit.

How to put them on

Put them on sitting down, with the boot already laced. Slip the cap over the toe, then pull the back loop until it goes over the heel. Check that the forefoot spikes are under the wide part of the foot and the heel spikes under the heel, that the rubber is not twisted and that it comes up slightly over the edge of the sole. To take them off, slip off the heel loop first. Put them on before the icy stretch, not when you are already in difficulty.

When to use them and when not

They are made for walking: icy roads and trails that are not too steep, packed snow, easy winter walks and hikes. They are not mountaineering crampons: do not use them on glaciers, steep slopes, exposed sections or sloping bare ice. In deep fresh snow they help little: that is where you need snowshoes. Before every outing check that all the spikes are there and that the rubber has no cracks. Take them off on dry rock and tarmac, where the spikes wear down, and before going indoors or driving.

Mountain or city: which one to choose

The mountain model has 10 spikes under the whole sole and three sizes: it also holds on descents and is the right choice for mountain roads and trails and for packed snow. The city model has 5 studs under the middle of the shoe and one size: it is the handiest for pavements, courtyards and car parks, goes on and off in a moment and fits in your pocket.

Frequently asked questions

Are they mountaineering crampons? No. They are ice cleats for walking on icy roads and trails and on packed snow. For glaciers, steep slopes and climbing you need real mountaineering crampons. They are not personal protective equipment.

Do they work on trainers too? Yes, just choose the size that matches your shoe size. On low shoes the toe cap and the heel loop still keep the cleat in place.

Which size should I take if I wear a 40? Size 40 falls into L (40-45). In general, if you are right on the border between two sizes or wear chunky boots, take the larger one.

Do they fit size 46 or larger? No: our largest size is L, up to 45. On larger shoes the cleat would be stretched too tight.

Ice cleats or snowshoes? They do two different things. Snowshoes stop you sinking into fresh snow; ice cleats stop you slipping on ice and packed snow.

Are they suitable for children? Yes, size S goes from 25 to 34. Have an adult check that they are centred and well stretched before setting off.

Do the spikes come off? They are the part that works hardest. They last longer if you take the cleats off on dry rock and tarmac, rinse and dry them after use and check before every outing that all the spikes are there.

Can I take them on a plane? To be on the safe side, put them in your checked luggage: airport security decides on pointed objects.

Can I walk on tarmac with the cleats? For short stretches yes, but the spikes wear down and you slip more. Taking them off where the ice ends makes them last.

How do I clean and store them? Rinse them with lukewarm water, let them dry and store them away from stoves and radiators: heat hardens the rubber.

What's in the pack? One pair of ice cleats, that is two pieces, in the chosen size.

Need them for town? There is the city model with 5 studs, one size, which goes on in a moment and fits in your pocket.

Icy steps and entrances? For the steps of your home or mountain hut there are the clear anti-slip strips; to quickly de-ice your car windows, the de-icing spray. All the other products are in the Anti-Slip Products category.
