In Italy the black letter R on a yellow background marks packages that contain hazardous waste. Whoever loads, transports or checks them recognises it at once, even from a distance, and does not confuse it with other labels. Many companies apply it as soon as the container enters the temporary storage area, so the packages are ready when the carrier arrives.
For packages of hazardous waste, circular no. 1912 of 2 October 2007 of the Italian National Register of Environmental Managers (Albo Nazionale Gestori Ambientali) sets a yellow label of 15x15 cm with a black letter R. These labels have this format. For vehicles carrying hazardous waste the same circular sets a 40x40 cm plate.
On metal and plastic drums, jerrycans, IBC tanks, cardboard boxes, big bags and all kinds of containers: used oils, solvents, paints, contaminated rags and filters, dirty packaging, batteries and any other waste classified as hazardous. Place it on a clearly visible side; on large containers it is better to apply two, on opposite sides.
These are PVC stickers, not paper: they resist water, rain, heat and UV rays and stay legible even when the container is moved or left outdoors, as the circular requires. For a good hold, apply them to a clean, dry, oil-free surface, pressing from the centre to the edges.
The R label does not replace the other information on the container: usually the EWC waste code and the description of the waste are also shown and, if the waste is also dangerous goods under ADR, the ADR hazard labels. For your specific case, follow the advice of your waste or ADR consultant.
Does it also go on non-hazardous waste? The circular provides for it for hazardous waste: the 15x15 cm label on packages and the 40x40 cm plate on vehicles.
What is the difference from the R sign for trucks? It is the same symbol in another size: the R plate for vehicles is 40x40 cm, the label for packages is 15x15 cm.
How many labels do I need? At least one per package, clearly visible. On large containers such as IBC tanks it is better to apply two, on opposite sides.
Do they resist outdoors? Yes, the PVC resists water, rain and UV rays. Apply them to a clean, dry surface.
Can they be removed and reused? No, they are designed to stay on the package. Use a new label on a new container.
What's in the pack? 15x15 cm stickers with a black R on a yellow background, in the quantity you choose: 10, 50, 100, 500 or 1000.
