A anti-slip tape can make stairs, steps, ramps and smooth floors safer without requiring complex work. To achieve an effective and durable result, however, the material must be chosen according to the environment, surface, presence of water and type of footwear used.
The needs of a domestic bathroom differ from those of a warehouse, workshop or condominium staircase. The first decision is therefore simple: abrasive or non-abrasive?

Abrasive tape is generally the most suitable choice when a firm grip is needed in areas used with work shoes or ordinary footwear. Non-abrasive tape has a textured surface without aggressive granules, making it more suitable for wet areas and contact with skin.
Which anti-slip solution should you choose for each environment?
Stairs, steps and ramps
For indoor stairs, access ramps, step edges and frequently used passageways, abrasive tape is normally indicated. In business areas, also consider colour visibility, traffic intensity and ease of inspection during maintenance.
Bathrooms, showers and changing rooms
In wet areas used barefoot, a non-abrasive solution is preferable. Transparent versions increase grip without significantly changing the appearance of shower trays, baths and ceramic or acrylic surfaces.
Outdoor areas and porous surfaces
On rough concrete, stone or wood, adhesion may be less uniform. In these cases, check product compatibility and consider using a primer. In the presence of water, dirt or heavy traffic, sealing the edges can limit lifting and water ingress.
Large surfaces or special applications
If an entire work area needs to be treated, a mat, coating or anti-slip spray may be more practical. Dedicated materials are available for edges visible in the dark, skateboards, heavy-duty areas and other specific needs.
How to apply anti-slip tape correctly
Even a good product can come off quickly if applied to a dirty, damp or unstable surface.
- Clean the surface by removing dust, grease, residue and moisture.
- Check the substrate: peeling paint, crumbly concrete or damaged tiles must be repaired before application.
- Measure and cut the tape without creating unnecessary joins in the busiest areas.
- Apply without stretching and press evenly, especially along the edges.
- Protect the installation with primer or sealant when required by the surface and environment.
The most common mistake
Applying the tape immediately after washing the floor. The surface may look dry but still retain moisture, especially in joints and porous materials.

For a home, securing a few steps, a shower or a ramp may be enough. In a business or condominium, you should also consider application consistency, traffic frequency, cleaning, periodic checks and the availability of the same product for future replacements.
For larger projects, measure the required linear metres, identify the tape width and colour, and allow a small additional quantity for maintenance and repairs.
