Shelter Off-Road – Invisible protection is a clear self-adhesive protective film that is highly effective against scratches and impacts, ideal for carbon or metal structures. "Off-Road" is perfect for the most demanding off-road use.

This tape protects against impacts by dispersing their energy within its own structure. It resists abrasion and the most common solvents, does not yellow and is unaffected by normal washing of the bodywork, yet it can still be removed if necessary without leaving marks on the paint underneath.

SHELTER brings together products and systems used in the aerospace sector to protect the aesthetic and functional integrity of surfaces and parts exposed to wear or accidental impacts.

It is highly conformable at room temperature: no heat source is needed to fit it to moderately three-dimensional surfaces, and no special equipment is required for application, just a cutter or scissors and a felt squeegee to help lay it down and apply even pressure.

Adhesion to all surfaces complies with AFERA 4001 standards; SHELTER is resistant to water and UV rays and can withstand temperatures from -30 °C to +130 °C.

Occasional contamination with petrol, grease, oil or detergents does not affect its performance or durability.

KEY STRENGTHS:

  • invisible protection against scratches and impacts
  • lightweight
  • easy to apply, adheres firmly even to curved surfaces
  • does not yellow
  • ideal for protecting carbon and metal
  • the viscoelastic behaviour dampens vibrations

FEATURES:

How it works

Shelter Off-Road consists of a 0.2 mm abrasion-resistant top layer and a 1 mm rubbery (viscoelastic) bottom layer. This exclusive composite construction allows Shelter to dissipate impact energy within its own structure, without transmitting it, or at least damping it very efficiently.
Shelter Off-Road is the thickest in the Shelter range and is perfect for the most demanding off-road use. Shelter Road (0.6 mm thick) is ideal for lighter off-road riding or for gravel/cyclocross. Shelter ZeroDue (0.2 mm thick) is excellent for protecting road bikes or surfaces mainly subject to abrasion, such as cranks.

Lightweight protection

With a weight of 0.130 g per square centimetre, Shelter Off-Road gives the following values:

  • Shelter Kit Off-Road: approx. 39 g (total weight of all the pieces in the kit).
  • Shelter Off-Road Pack (two 58 x 500 mm strips, 1.2 mm thick): approx. 70 g.
  • Shelter Off-Road Roll, complete 5 m (58 mm x 5 m, 1.2 mm thick): approx. 350 g.

Available in different sizes and formats

  • Shelter Kit Off-Road: a pre-cut sheet designed for mountain bikes, with the pieces needed to protect the most exposed points of the frame (chainstay, down tube, top tube where it can be hit by the brake levers, cable routing).
  • Shelter Pack Off-Road: sealed pack containing two 58 x 500 mm strips(*), 1.2 mm thick. Ideal for protecting one bicycle, shaping the material as you wish to suit the surfaces to be protected.
  • Shelter Roll Off-Road: adhesive roll in 1 m or 5 m lengths, recommended for enthusiasts, shops and teams. Size: 58 mm x 1 m or 5 m(*), 1.2 mm thick.

(*) tolerance +/- 10% on length and width

Easy to apply

Shelter's adhesion is described as "semi-structural": very strong but not permanent. After application, Shelter takes 8 hours to reach optimum adhesion. From then on it is unaffected by normal bike washing, yet it can still be removed, if necessary, without damaging the paint underneath.

Applying Shelter requires no special tools or procedures, just ordinary manual skill and patience:

  1. after removing cables or anything else that may get in the way, clean the surface where Shelter will be applied with alcohol and a clean cloth. Remove any dry alcohol residue with another clean, dry cloth;
  2. take the suitable pre-cut Shelter piece, or cut a piece of Shelter to the shape and size you need, without removing the backing paper;
  3. check that the piece fits the area you want to protect and that your hands are clean. Then remove the backing paper completely, exposing the adhesive surface (try not to touch the adhesive with your fingers, or keep contact to a minimum: as it is transparent, fingerprints may show afterwards);
  4. lay Shelter lightly over the area to be protected, without applying pressure and without stretching it. Reposition it if necessary until it is exactly where you want it. Then start applying steady pressure, working from the centre towards the edges, to avoid trapping air bubbles or creating creases;
  5. gradually extend the pressure over the whole piece so that it adheres fully to the surface. Work the edges and curved areas well to obtain even adhesion.

You can ride the bike straight after applying Shelter, bearing in mind that optimum adhesion is reached after 8 hours.

To remove Shelter, peel it slowly off the surface, taking care not to delaminate it. This way Shelter will not leave any adhesive residue, even after several years.

UV resistant

Shelter is transparent but does not yellow over time, thanks to its resistance to UV rays, a common cause of yellowing in other protective films; in this way it also protects the frame paint underneath from fading.
IMPORTANT: after removing Shelter there may be colour differences between protected and unprotected areas with fluorescent paints or bright colours.

Viscoelasticity reduces vibrations

The transmission of vibrational energy through any structure can be reduced by adding viscoelastic elements at certain points. This is exactly what Shelter does, not only protecting stiff carbon frames from impacts but also reducing vibrations. One example is the Shelter Wheel Kit.

Beware of copies

Translucent "Shelter Effetto Mariposa" logos are embedded in the Shelter film. Both "Effetto Mariposa" and "Shelter" are registered trademarks.

Shelter is made in Italy.
