Speed limit discs indicate the maximum speed allowed depending on the type of vehicle and the road traveled. Article 142 of the Highway Code requires freight carriers to apply two signal discs on the rear of their vehicle; the obligation concerns all freight transport vehicles except military vehicles when assigned to the armed forces.
The first sign must be placed on the left rear of the vehicle and represents the maximum limit allowed on extra-urban roads, while the second, placed on the right rear of the vehicle, represents the maximum limit allowed for that vehicle on highways.
In the case of vehicle combinations, the signs must be applied to the rear of the trailer.
Below we list all categories of vehicles involved and the signs to be applied:
LIMIT 40—60 All construction vehicles when traveling fully loaded LIMIT 70—80 Road trains consisting of tractor units and trailers, trucks with a total mass when fully loaded exceeding 12 tons used for freight or other purposes; trucks with a total mass exceeding 5 tons when used for passenger transport. LIMIT 80—100 Vehicles intended for freight transport with a total fully loaded mass over 3.5 tons up to 12 tons. The speed limit discs to be applied must have a diameter of 20 cm and be equipped with approved reflective film, as required by law, otherwise one may incur an administrative penalty. In addition, it is advisable to apply the speed limit discs in a dry environment after properly cleaning the surface to prevent them from detaching over time.
