Clear awning repair tape – 10 cm x 5 m
How to repair a torn awning without taking it down
A gust of wind, a branch or fabric rolled up while still wet: the awning tears, gets a hole or splits along a seam. Replacing the fabric is expensive and calling in an awning specialist means waiting. With this tape the repair takes a few minutes, even with the awning in place: clean the spot, cut a piece a little larger than the damage, peel off the paper and press it onto the fabric. The tear is closed and the rain stays out.
Why clear and why 10 cm wide
It is a smooth, clear PET film about 0.2 mm thick, with a strong adhesive on one side protected by white backing paper. It is not a fabric tape: precisely because it is smooth and clear, once pressed down it lets the colour and stripes of the awning show through and is barely noticeable. The 10 cm width is made for the typical damage on awnings, long tears and seams that give way with sun and age: the tape covers the damage with two or three centimetres to spare on each side, and that margin is what holds it in place.
How to apply it
Open the awning and clean the area around the tear of dust, grime and leaves with a damp cloth, then let it dry well: this is the step that makes the difference. Cut the tape so that it overlaps the damage by at least two or three centimetres on each side and round off the corners with scissors so they don't lift. Peel off the paper without touching the adhesive with your fingers, lay the tape down without stretching it and press firmly from the centre outwards to push out the air. If you can, put a piece on the other side of the fabric too, above and below. Leave the awning open and dry for 24 hours before rolling it up or getting it wet: the bond increases in the hours after application. In cold weather the adhesive grips less: warm the fabric and the tape with a hairdryer before applying.
Which awnings and fabrics it works on
It works on PVC and on coated polyester and nylon fabrics, canvas and vinyl: awnings on balconies, terraces, shops and bars, folding and garden gazebos, garden and beach parasols, pergolas and canopies with a fabric roof, cover tarps. On acrylic awning fabric, the most common on balconies, it holds if the fabric is clean and dry and the tape is pressed down for a long time: these fabrics are treated to shed water, so the adhesive needs pressure and the 24 hours of rest. It does not stick to silicone-treated fabrics, which are very smooth and slippery, and it must not be applied to wet or dirty fabric. Where the fabric is under a lot of tension, for example near the arms or the roller, it is better to have it re-sewn and use the tape to seal.
Gazebos, parasols and tarps
The same tape closes holes in gazebo roofs, tears between parasol ribs and cuts in tarps covering garden furniture, firewood, boats and trailers. On gazebos and parasols, repair with the fabric well stretched so the tape doesn't crease.
Frequently asked questions
Is it visible? It is a clear, smooth film: on striped or plain awnings it is barely noticeable. In direct sunlight it can give a slight glossy reflection.
Does it withstand sun and rain? Yes, it is waterproof and made for outdoor use. If the awning stays out all year, check the repair at the start of the season: if a corner has lifted, press it down again or add a piece on top.
Can I roll up the awning after the repair? Yes, after the 24 hours of rest. The tape is thin and flexible and rolls up with the fabric.
Does it work on a split seam? Yes: place it over the open seam, well centred, and it stops water getting through. If the seam is open over many centimetres at a point where the fabric is under tension, it is better to have it re-sewn and use the tape to seal.
Can it be removed? Once stuck, the bond increases over time: peeling it off may damage the fabric. It is meant to stay.
How much tape do I need? The roll is 10 centimetres wide and 5 metres long: for a 20 cm tear, a piece of about 25 cm is enough.
What is in the box? One roll of clear repair tape, 10 cm x 5 m.
