On metal shelves goods slide around: boxes lean, bags get mixed up and stacks topple into the next lane. Many people think that dividing a metal shelf takes screw-on dividers, slotted shelves or lots of plastic bins. There is a simpler way: magnetic shelf dividers. They are 20 cm high plastic dividers with an inverted «T» base, and a magnetic strip covers the whole underside of the base. Place them on the shelf and they stay where you put them; when your stock changes, you move them by hand. No screws, holes, slots or adhesive on the shelf. They are as long as the shelf is deep: 30, 40, 50 or 60 cm.
How to divide a metal shelf without drilling
Decide how many lanes you need, place the dividers at the right distance and fill the spaces: every item has its own lane and the boxes stay in line even when you take one out. Traditional sheet-metal dividers only work on the slotted shelves of their own brand and move in fixed steps; these go anywhere on any iron or steel shelf, painted or galvanised, even on shelving that is already assembled and full of goods.
From the shop stockroom to the large warehouse
In a shop stockroom they separate boxes and seasonal stock, which changes place every few months. In pharmacies they keep small, similar packs apart, so the right one gets picked. In hardware stores and car parts stores they create compartments for boxes of different sizes. In e-commerce warehouses they form the lanes of the picking locations and move when the range changes. In offices and archives they keep binders and files upright, like a bookend. In garages and cellars they bring order to galvanised shelving.
How to choose the size
The length of the divider matches the depth of the shelf: for a 40 cm deep shelf take the 40 cm. If the shelf is deeper than the sizes available, place two dividers back to back, one from each side. The pack of 4 divides a 90-100 cm shelf into five lanes; the pack of 10 is enough for a whole shelving unit.
With magnetic labels
Each lane is easier to recognise with a label: our magnetic C-profile label holders attach to the shelf edge in front of each compartment and move together with the dividers. This way the location is always right, even when you reorganise the shelving.
Do they work on stainless steel, wood or plastic shelves?
They work on iron and steel shelves, painted or galvanised. Many stainless steels, for example the common AISI 304, are not magnetic: test with a magnet first. On wood, plastic, glass and aluminium the magnet does not stick.
Do they stay put when you push the boxes?
Yes. The magnetic strip covers the whole base, so the divider grips the shelf along its entire length. We use them in our own warehouse too (the photos with the spray cans were taken there): on our metal shelving they stay in place even when a stack of boxes is pushed sideways against them. To move it, lift it and set it down where you need it.
Do they damage the shelf paint?
No. There are no screws or adhesive on the shelf: the divider is placed and removed without holes and without residue.
How many dividers do I need?
One divider fewer than the lanes you want: for five compartments on a shelf you need four. To fit out a whole warehouse, write to us: we will prepare a quote for the quantities you need.
