Fire blanket in fibreglass, EN 1869 – 4 sizes from 100x100 to 200x200 cm, with wall-mount pouch

Fibreglass fire blanket to EN 1869

What it is for

A fire blanket puts out small fires by cutting off the oxygen. It is the simplest tool for an oil or fat fire in a pan or deep fryer: never use water there, because it makes the burning oil splash.

It also works on small fires on a worktop, in a bin or on an appliance, and for wrapping a person whose clothes are on fire.

How to use it

1. If you can do it safely, switch off the cooker or the heat source.
2. Pull both tapes firmly downwards: the blanket comes out of the pouch.
3. Hold it in front of you like a shield, with your hands covered by the edge, and lay it over the flames starting from the side nearest to you. Do not throw it.
4. Leave it in place until everything has cooled down and do not lift it to check: the fire could flare up again.
5. If the fire does not go out, leave the room, close the door and call 112.
6. Replace the blanket after use: it is single-use.

If a person’s clothes are on fire, get them to lie down and wrap them in the blanket from the neck down to smother the flames. For this use choose size L or XL.

Which size to choose

• S 100 x 100 cm – cars, campers, boats and small kitchens.
• M 120 x 120 cm – the most common size for home kitchens, offices and shops.
• L 150 x 150 cm – professional kitchens, laboratories, workshops and warehouses.
• XL 200 x 200 cm – large areas, industrial settings and wrapping an adult.

Features

• Two layers of woven fibreglass fabric with an inner layer of fire-retardant film.
• Insulates against heat up to 580 °C.
• Conforms to the European standard EN 1869:1997 for fire blankets.
• Pouch with a ring for wall mounting and two quick-release tapes.
• Single-use: replace it after a fire.

Where to keep it

Hang it on the wall near the cooker, but not above it: you must be able to reach it without leaning over the flames. At home, next to the kitchen door is a good place; in campers and boats, near the hob; at work, near the points where a fire could start. Mark its position with a sign, for example the ISO 7010 “Firefighting equipment” sign F004.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fire blanket for? To put out a small fire by smothering it, especially oil and fat fires in the kitchen, where water is dangerous. It is also used to wrap a person whose clothes are on fire.

Is a fire blanket mandatory? Not at home. In workplaces the firefighting equipment is chosen through the fire risk assessment: a fire blanket is recommended where people cook with oil and fat, such as kitchens, canteens and bars, and it complements the extinguisher rather than replacing it.

Can it be reused? No, it is single-use: replace it with a new one after a fire.

Fire blanket or extinguisher? For a small fire in a pan the blanket is simpler and leaves no mess. A bigger fire needs an extinguisher: keeping both is the safest choice. We also sell a portable 1 kg fire extinguisher with holder.

Which size for a home kitchen? The M 120 x 120 cm covers pans and deep fryers well. If space is tight, for example in a camper, the S 100 x 100 cm is fine.

What is in the box? One fire blanket in the chosen size, folded in its pouch with a ring for the wall.
