Insulated water metre frost cover – 55 x 25 cm, for outdoor use, pipes and valves

  • Protects the meter from frost – wraps the water meter and the pipe on either side of it in a padded jacket: it holds in the heat, shields against wind, snow and frost, and helps stop the water inside the meter from freezing.
  • Waterproof on both sides – Oxford fabric that resists tearing and ageing: rain and damp don't soak the padding, even when the meter is outdoors.
  • 55 x 25 cm, T-shaped – the 55 cm side runs along the pipe: the meter sits in the taller central section and the two side arms wrap around the incoming and outgoing pipes. Before ordering, check that the meter and its fittings fit comfortably within this length.
  • Installs without tools – place it under the meter, wrap it around and close it with the hook-and-loop strips along the edges; nothing in the plumbing has to be taken apart.
  • Opens for meter reading – just undo the closure to see the dial and take a reading, then close it again; at the end of winter, take it off, let it dry and store it away.
  • For valves and pipes too – protects gate valves, irrigation valves, backflow preventers, pressure gauges and exposed lengths of pipe: in the garden, in a wall recess, in the garage or in the cellar.
  • For businesses – an invoice with every order, quotes for bulk orders and purchasing on MePa as StickersLab s.r.l.

Insulated water meter frost cover – 55 x 25 cm

This water meter frost cover is a padded cover made of waterproof fabric: it wraps around the meter and the length of pipe on either side, holds in the heat and shields it from wind, rain and snow. In winter the water meter is one of the most exposed parts of the plumbing. It is often outdoors, in a wall recess, in an underground meter box or in an unheated garage, and on sub-zero nights the standing water inside it can freeze: water stops reaching the taps and the ice can damage the meter and its fittings. That is why, when the cold weather arrives, water companies advise people to protect it.

What it does, in practice

The cover insulates the meter from the cold air and shelters it from the weather. The outer fabric is waterproof on both sides, so rain, melting snow and damp don't soak the padding. The fabric resists tearing and ageing, so the cover can stay fitted outdoors for the whole season. It is not a heater and does not produce heat: it slows down the cooling of the meter and helps stop the water from freezing. During a cold spell lasting several days, it is worth combining it with the other precautions described in the questions below.

Size and shape

Opened out flat, the cover measures 55 x 25 cm and is shaped like a T. The 55 cm side runs along the pipe: the body of the meter goes in the taller central section, while the two lower side arms close around the incoming and outgoing pipes. If there is a pressure-reducing valve or another bulky valve right next to the meter, it is best to place it in the central section, which is roomier: the arms are made to wrap around the pipe. Before ordering, measure the length of the meter with its fittings: it must fit comfortably within the 55 cm. It comes in one size only.

How to fit it

Open the cover and place it under the meter, with the taller section lined up with the meter and the two arms along the pipe, one on each side. Close it around the meter and the pipe, pressing the hook-and-loop strips firmly along the edges so that no gaps are left along the closure for cold air to get in. Make it fit snugly without squashing the fittings. No tools are needed and you don't have to touch the plumbing: to remove it, simply undo the closure.

Material and colour

The outside is blue Oxford fabric, waterproof on both sides; inside, the cover is padded, and it closes with hook-and-loop strips along the edges. To insulate the other cold spots as well, browse our thermal insulation for the home and pipework.

Frequently asked questions

How do you protect a water meter from frost?

The simplest way is to insulate it against the cold, together with the nearby pipes, using a material that stays dry: this cover wraps straight around the meter. If the meter is in a wall recess or an underground meter box, keep the door or lid closed and seal any gaps where cold air gets in. Protect exposed pipes near the meter separately, with frost-protection pipe insulation tape. On the coldest nights, leaving a tap running at a trickle helps keep the pipes from freezing; if the house is left empty for weeks, turn off the water at the main stopcock and drain the pipes.

Which insulating material is right for a water meter?

You need a material that insulates and does not absorb water. Rags, old blankets or newspapers get soaked by rain and damp and, once wet, no longer protect the meter; on top of that, they hold moisture against it. This cover has its padding enclosed in a fabric that is waterproof on both sides. To line the walls of a masonry recess, rigid insulation boards are used instead.

Will it fit my meter?

It is designed for water meters fitted in line on the pipe and also works for valves, gate valves and backflow preventers. Laid flat, it measures 55 x 25 cm: before ordering, check that the meter and its fittings fit comfortably within the 55 cm length and that the body of the meter fits into the central section.

Can you read the meter with the cover on?

Yes. Undo the hook-and-loop closure, read the dial and close it again. The cover comes off by hand, with no tools, so the meter always stays accessible, including for meter readings and checks by your water company.

What should I do if the meter is already frozen?

Do not use naked flames or boiling water on the meter: a sudden jump in temperature can damage it. Warm the room gently or wrap the pipe in warm cloths and wait for the water to start flowing again. If the meter is cracked or leaking, turn off the water and call your water company. Once everything is back to normal, fit the cover to reduce the risk of it happening again.

Can it be left outdoors all winter?

Yes, it is made to stay outside: the fabric is waterproof on both sides and resists ageing. Check from time to time that the closure is still firmly fastened, especially after a meter reading. In spring, take it off, let it dry and store it until the following winter.
