The speed limit discs indicate the maximum speed allowed depending on the type of vehicle and the road being traveled. Article 142 of the Highway Code requires hauliers to apply two signal discs to the rear of their vehicle; the requirement applies to all freight vehicles except military vehicles when used by the armed forces.
The first sign must be placed on the rear left side of the vehicle and represents the maximum limit allowed on extra-urban roads, while the second, placed on the rear right side of the vehicle, represents the maximum limit allowed for that vehicle on the highway.
In the case of vehicle combinations, the signs must be applied to the rear of the trailer.
Below we list all categories of vehicles involved and the signs to be applied:
LIMIT 40—60 All work vehicles when traveling fully loaded LIMIT 70—80 Road trains consisting of tractor and trailer, trucks with a total mass fully loaded exceeding 12 tons used for goods transport or other uses; trucks with a total mass exceeding 5 tons when used for passenger transport. LIMIT 80—100 Vehicles intended for goods transport with a total mass fully loaded over 3.5 tons up to 12 tons. The speed limit discs to be applied must have a diameter of 20cm and be equipped with approved film, as required by law, otherwise administrative sanctions may apply. Furthermore, it is advisable to apply the speed limit discs in a dry environment after properly cleaning the surface to avoid detachment over time.
