A portable air conditioner pushes the heat out through its exhaust hose, but the hose itself gets hot and, along the stretch that crosses the room, gives part of that heat back to the space you are trying to cool: if you own a portable unit, you can feel the warmth near the hose. This cover wraps the hose in a three-layer insulating fabric and keeps the heat inside it all the way to the window. The room cools down faster and the air conditioner works more efficiently, without changing anything in your setup.
It reduces the heat the hose radiates into the room and protects it: from the sun hitting it near the window, which over time hardens and damages the plastic, from dust and from insects. The hose stays cleaner and lasts longer. It is not a new hose and you do not need to buy anything else: it goes over the one you already have.
Opened flat, the cover measures 150 × 53 cm and fits exhaust hoses from 13 to 15 cm in diameter, i.e. 5" and 5.9", the most common sizes on portable air conditioners. The 53 cm width leaves enough fabric to close the velcro even on 15 cm hoses, where narrower covers fall short. Measure the diameter of your hose before ordering. If your hose is shorter than 150 cm, the extra part of the cover folds back on itself and is held in place by one of the straps.
The easiest way is to detach the hose from the air conditioner and stretch it out. Lay it on the cover, wrap it and close the double velcro along its whole length, then tighten the four elastic straps with buckles, spaced along the hose. Reconnect the hose and you are done: it takes a few minutes and no tools. If the hose is well stretched, you can also fit the cover while it is still connected.
The thermal insulating fabric has three layers, with finished edges that do not fray. At the end of the season the cover comes off, can be washed and is stored folded together with the hose. Is it really worth insulating a portable air conditioner hose? The exhaust hose gets warm to the touch and heats the air around it. Insulating it reduces the heat that goes back into the room; the difference is most noticeable in small rooms and when the hose is long or runs close to where you sit.
Will it fit my air conditioner? Yes, if the exhaust hose has a diameter between 13 and 15 cm, whatever the brand of the air conditioner.
Can it be used outdoors? It is designed for the part of the hose inside the home. To insulate outdoor pipes or protect them from frost you need a different product, such as our aluminum pipe insulation tape.
